Green River Student Newspaper Garners Top Recognition

Students from Enumclaw, Buckley are part of the winning team.

Green River Community College’s student newspaper, The Current, was named the top community college newspaper in the state at a recent awards luncheon.

 Overall, The Current won 14 awards at the Washington Community College Journalism Association’s annual awards luncheon. It won first place in the General Excellence category as well as third place award in staff editorials.

Along with Knowlton, award-winner Bailey Jo Josie also hails from Enumclaw. Another award-winner, Lacey Steward, is a resident of Buckley.

 “This award belongs to the students because they’re the ones who have worked hard all year long,” said Knowlton, who singled out Editor-in-Chief Remco Zwetsloot and Managing Editor Kelli Wyatt for their work. “They have produced a smart, engaging publication and, in the process, shown that the press is at its best when it’s a thoughtful, contributing member of its community.”
