Rotary Boosts Enumclaw Village Tutors Program with $1,000 Gift

Ryan Overbay reports the program this year at Enumclaw Youth and Family Services is doing well and the monetary gift will be used for supplies and staff oversight moving forward.

We love messages on our Enumclaw Patch Facebook page and Thursday morning were greeted with a short and sweet item from Enumclaw Youth and Family Services:

"Enumclaw Youth & Family Services would like to thank the Enumclaw Rotary for their generous donation to help fund the EYFS Village Tutoring Program!"

That got us curious so we stopped by Thursday afternoon and chatted with program director for some details.

Overbay said he was asked earlier by this year's president of the Enumclaw Rotary Club Terry Parker what help the program might need from Rotary.

After some trial and error with scheduling this year, the Village Tutors Program at Enumclaw Youth and Family Services is now offered every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and in that time, seven volunteers serve anywhere from eight to 10 students. Many are looking for help in basic algebra, he said, and there appears to be a hump for some students particularly in the 8th grade level heading into freshman year in high school.

Overbay said this makes up a good balance but moving into the summer and beyond, $1,000 would be great for purchasing supplies such as bigger white boards and funding the staff oversight that needs to occur during the tutoring times.

After all, the Youth Center shuts down every Wednesday afternoon so that Village Tutors can commence in the same meeting room at the EYFS building.

According to Overbay, Parker told him the club agreed to the $1,000 donation and on Thursday, he presented Rotary with an update on the program.

Looking ahead, Overbay said he's looking at setting up a summer math camp or reading program and hopefully open to two days a week for the next academic year.

That money could help with that too, he said.
