Cold Snap Forecast for Seattle Area; Severe Weather Shelters Now Open

Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-20s Thursday and Friday nights.

Temperatures will drop into the 20s throughout much of the Western Washington region tonight as a cold-air mass moves into the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a special statement advising that temperatures will be in the high teens to low 30s tonight. Light snowfall will remain a possiblity for many areas into the evening hours.

The cool weather will continue into Saturday, when a weak weather system arrives that could bring 2-3 inches of snow to the Puget Sound-area lowlands.

Enumclaw's forecast calls for a low of 24 tonight and overnight on Friday. Daytime highs will be around 38 on Friday and Saturday.

King County has opened severe weather shelters in Auburn, Kent and Renton. Click here for more information, or click here to see a list of regular winter shelters throughout King County.

The county has also offered following cold-weather safety tips:

  1. When the snow begins to fall, road conditions can deteriorate very quickly. Drive only if necessary and limit travel to daylight hours if at all possible. Keep others informed of your schedule and route, and stay on main roads. Register for King County road alerts.
  2. If you ride the bus, register for transit alerts and check our timetable for snow routes.
  3. Protect your pets by keeping them warm, dry and sheltered with access to non-frozen water.
  4. Insulate pipes and wrap outdoor faucets with towels and plastic bags to keep them from freezing.
  5. Be aware that power failures and other service disruptions may occur. Keep a battery operated radio, flashlights and extra batteries on hand.
  6. Never use charcoal grills, gas grills, or generators indoors, because they can cause a buildup of dangerous carbon monoxide gas which can lead to poisoning or even death.
  7. When leaving the house, dress in layers and wear warm clothing, including a hat, gloves and sturdy footwear, even if just running a quick errand.

Hi, Susan and Lou. We do know that our events calendar has issues at the moment with incorrect timesRead More displaying, and our engineering team is at work to correct this. My best suggestion at the moment is to post a comment on an event with the correct time, if you aren't able to go in and edit an event that you previously posted. Our ownership has not changed -- we have been and continue to be a part of the AOL family. Our intent with the new design is to highlight the great content that our users create and share with the community. We know there have been some bumps with our launch and are working diligently to fix them. We hope you'll be patient with us and continue to share on Patch.

Always looking for a local nature trail, I really enjoy reading Mary Janosik's well written blog. InRead More fact, almost all the dedicated bloggers posting on the Enumclaw PATCH have something worthwhile reading. But it is not an easy job for most of us, taking some time to research and write, without any compensation. Our only reward is knowing we are being read and appreciated and the only way we know that is when you comment. In my opinion, most of the PATCH blogs are a community service, informing residents about our community and issues concerning you, our readers. So please send your favorite bloggers a thank you or a comment once in awhile to keep us motivated and feel appreciated..
