Enumclaw's Delicious Gems

Enumclaw residents Dave and Sue White opened the Rusty Plow Farm to the public for blueberry picking earlier this summer.

On their large piece of property on 448th St., Dave and Sue White weren't doing much other than selling hay. Then they thought of starting a blueberry farm.

It turned out that the soil's conditions were just right for growing the juicy fruit, and now they are five years into their project, the Rusty Plow Farm.

It is the first summer they have been able to open the farm to pickers, beginning in early July. It hasn't been without difficulties - they have to close often for ripening. Plus, the birds have begun going after the berries.

"If we lose these Chandlers, that'll be the biggest disappointment of the summer for me," Dave White said.

Chandler is one of the five blueberry varieties grown at the farm. Each has a slightly different taste.

Blueberry plants take seven years to fully mature, so they are not at their full output by now. White said that by maturity, each bush could produce up to 10 pounds.

Meanwhile, when they're able to open the farm, the Whites enjoy interacting with parents and children who come to pick fresh blueberries. They also sell to Avalanche Delite, a frozen yogurt shop on 1st Street.

Check back to see when the farm is able to open next. It's located on 23206 SE 448th St.
