Mayor Reynolds Issues Disaster Relief Challenge

City looks to band together and support the recovery efforts in Japan following the massive earthquake earlier this month.

Mayor Liz Reynolds has challenged city employees and local businesses to help relief efforts in Japan by donating to ShelterBox, an international agency that delivers boxes of aid to those most in need in disaster areas, according to a city update today.

City employees are in the process of collecting funds to send to ShelterBox.  Mutual of Enumclaw and Transmogrify have answered the Mayor's challenge and are also collecting funds.

ShelterBox provides a box of necessary supplies for up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment.

Enumclaw High School students are taking it upon themselves to help those affected by the earthquake and aftermath in Japan by raising money to create 1,000 paper cranes -- each for $1 during school lunch hours. The symbolism behind 1,000 paper cranes relates that one who folds 1,000 paper cranes will be granted a wish and one who has a paper crane will have the symbol of peace and happiness. Students aim to give proceeds from the sale to the Japanese Red Cross
