Regional Knights of Columbus Free Throw Champions Announced

George Rossman, representing the local Knights of Columbus chapter, shares with Patch an update from the organization's free throw championship contest this past weekend in Puyallup.

Six boys and girls from this area, ages 10 to 13, were named District Champions of the 2012 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship February 11 in competition in Puyallup and have earned the right to compete at the regional level. Sacred Heart Council 13364 in Enumclaw, together with other councils in District 11, sponsored the event. All those competing were previous winners at the local levels. The local event was held January 29 at Southwood Elementary School.

Those competing from Enumclaw did excepionally well by winning their division in six of the 10 age groups.

The winners at the District are as follows (the number of baskets made in parenthesis)

  • Girls: Age 10 Danika Seabrands (10); Age 12 Jessica Cerne (7); Age 13 Sydney Andersen (20)
  • Boys: Age 11 Ricky Saborio (14); Age 12 Trevor Cassell (17); Age 13 Drew Seabrands (19)

Each contestant was allowed 25 free throw attempts and now have set their sites on the State Contest to be held in Yakima on March 24, 2012.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district and state competitions. International champions are announced by the KoC international headquarters based on the scores from the state level competitions. All boys and girls age 10 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and compete in their respective age divisions. Last year more than 179,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,000 local competitions.
