Empty Bowls Raises More Than $5,000 for Local Food Banks

The second annual event showcasing the work of local artists while bringing awareness to local and global hunger issues, was able to provide just over $2,500 each for the food banks at Plateau Outreach Ministries and Kiwanis.

In its second year, the Empty Bowls fundraising and awareness event at Enumclaw High School on Friday raised an impressive $5,100 to support local food banks.

Organizer Diane Anderson told Patch on Monday that mean both the Plateau Outeach Ministries and Kiwanis food banks received just over $2,500 each.

Participants were invited to take part in a simple meal and to take home as a souvenir a one-of-a-kind bowl created by a local artist to serve as a reminder of continued hunger issues around the world.

Patch blogger Doreen Anderson shared many vivid photos from her visit to the event which you can view here. And the Courier-Herald has more.

Mayor Liz Reynolds, a ceramics artist herself who was instrumental in helping to put on this year's event, was unfortunately ill and couldn't make it. On Monday, she shared with Patch:

Once again the gathering of Enumclaw hearts and  community resources came together to assist those in need within our community through a collaborative process involving the Arts….  Culinary Arts, with the fantastic array of soups offered by local restaurants  and visual arts through Green River Community College Pottery students, Enumclaw Arts. Alive! as well as area artists and  graphic artist Celia Bender……. . Hi, Susan and Lou. We do know that our events calendar has issues at the moment with incorrect timesRead More displaying, and our engineering team is at work to correct this. My best suggestion at the moment is to post a comment on an event with the correct time, if you aren't able to go in and edit an event that you previously posted. Our ownership has not changed -- we have been and continue to be a part of the AOL family. Our intent with the new design is to highlight the great content that our users create and share with the community. We know there have been some bumps with our launch and are working diligently to fix them. We hope you'll be patient with us and continue to share on Patch.

Always looking for a local nature trail, I really enjoy reading Mary Janosik's well written blog. InRead More fact, almost all the dedicated bloggers posting on the Enumclaw PATCH have something worthwhile reading. But it is not an easy job for most of us, taking some time to research and write, without any compensation. Our only reward is knowing we are being read and appreciated and the only way we know that is when you comment. In my opinion, most of the PATCH blogs are a community service, informing residents about our community and issues concerning you, our readers. So please send your favorite bloggers a thank you or a comment once in awhile to keep us motivated and feel appreciated..
