Blood Drive at Sacred Heart Church

Blood donors across Western Washington responded strongly to an urgent appeal Friday, January 20th from Puget Sound Blood Center as winter storms caused the regional blood supply to fall to emergency levels. Snow and icy road conditions last week caused cancellation of almost all blood drives and a drastic reduction in donor visits to blood centers. Lost donations exceeded 2200 units.

“We are deeply grateful to donors who attended our blood centers and blood drives on Friday, Saturday, and even special center openings on Sunday -- which help stabilized the supply to take us through the next few days,” said Dr. James P. AuBuchon, president and chief executive officer of Puget Sound Blood Center. “But we have a considerable ways to go to restore the blood supply back to normal levels.” You can give blood at Sacred Heart:

AuBuchon repeated his emergency appeal for blood and platelet contributions during the week ahead. “If you haven’t given blood recently, we’re asking donors to make a special effort this week to donate,” he said. “Donors provide a live-saving gift, and we’re counting on sustained support from donors and the community to replenish our blood supply by the end of this month.”

Whatever the weather, demand for blood continues: patients are in hospitals for surgery, ER’s are treating traumatic injuries, and people are undergoing organ transplants or receiving cancer treatments.  Since most people need transfusion at some time during their lives, we all rely on the blood supply to always be there when we need it.
