Bites Nearby: Krain Corner Inn

Krain Corner Inn is a dining experience everyone will want to enjoy. The best part is that it's local, its friendliness is truly the down-home kind and its meals are prepared fresh at the restaurant by amazing chefs.

It’s usually a good sign when you pass a restaurant and the parking lot is overloaded with cars.  It’s an even better sign when you pass by the same restaurant two hours later and the parking lot is still full and there is a line of people waiting to get in the door.  Such is the case with -- it never fails to impress me that this restaurant is always busy.

Krain is located on the corner of 264th Avenue East in Enumclaw in a shabby, yet quaint, historic home.  Everything about this place is about as non-fancy as it gets from the handwritten signs featuring breakfast all day to the stenciled A-boards prominently displayed around the building. The letters and country-style pictures are hand-drawn and somewhat fading but as the infamous saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

As a huge lover of breakfast, I was pleased to find that Krain offers breakfast all day. Old-time favorites include eggs benedict and corned beef hash as well as specialty omelets with unique names like Viva Zapata (sausage, tomato, peppers, olives,  jalapenos, Swiss cheese, picante sauce and sour cream) and the Critic’s Choice (sausage, jalapenos and Swiss cheese). Nothing like your own personal pizza … egg-style!  Other classics include fresh Idaho trout and eggs and 10-ounce New York steak and eggs.

Lunch options are plentiful and include selections such as a variety of fresh ground hamburgers, specialty sandwiches like the Kielbasa Grinder (kielbasa sausage, sauerkraut and German mustard on a grilled French roll) and the Hen Pen (grilled chicken breast topped with thinly sliced ham and Swiss cheese on a grilled sesame bun). There is a selection of nice-sized sandwiches that are accompanied with your choice of French fries, home-style potato salad, coleslaw or fresh soup of the day.

In addition to all these amazing options are lunch platters that are also available for dinner. The fish at Krain's is known to be fresh and one of the most popular items in the restaurant. Seafood platter options include Fish and Chips (battered or grilled), the Captain’s Platter (battered cod, prawns, clam strips and scallops …yum) and juicy Chicken Tenders.

And now onto one more reason why this place is popular: dinner. Home-style specials include the Salmon Filet (fresh Atlantic salmon cooked in lemon and wine), Coal Miner’s Pot Roast which is a favorite, Imperial Angus Prime Rib (an enormously juicy cut of roasted prime rib served with au jus and horseradish) and Chicken Cordon Bleu which is handmade and topped with hollandaise sauce.  These are just a few of the marvelous options to choose from and selecting just one is guaranteed to be the hardest decision of the day.

Prices are very reasonable for the quality and freshness of the food and for the experience itself. This is a very family-friendly restaurant and everyone is welcome. Breakfast (did I mention it was all day?) and lunch average from $5 to $9; lunch platters are about $10 to $15. Dinners range from $10 to $20. There is a full bar as well and even old-time favorites for the kids like the Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers.

To conclude, the parking lot is full for a reason and the wait to get in is well worth the time.  The cuisine is unique, flavorful and fresh and although the cover of the book may be worn, what is found inside is a classic.
