Bites Nearby: The Kitchen

If you are looking for a casual and friendly place to grab a bite, check out the Kitchen located at 1521 Cole Street.

I was having one of those days where I was hungry but not real hungry. I wanted a sandwich but not a gourmet sandwich and had very limited time to eat.  That’s when I passed by this little unassuming restaurant on Cole Street called and it is here that I got exactly what I wanted which was quick, cheap and good.

The first thing I noticed was the cute little bistro tables outside the restaurant to enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal. However, since it was around 40 degrees and snow was visible on the nearby mountains, I opted for the warmth found inside.  The interior was quite homey and fun with collectible Coca Cola memorabilia and a 50s theme.  It was bright, clean and smelled like an old time café which is a comforting aroma for the nostalgic type.

Even though they were closing in about 15 minutes (open from 7 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. daily), I did not feel rushed nor was I given the all too familiar look that dares diners to not order take-out for a family of twelve.  I was told to take my time and everything was still available as the grill was still open.  I opted for the grilled cheese—a simple sandwich to satisfy.

And that it was:  a simple sandwich on a plain plate with a bag of Lays potato chips.  It did the trick.  The sourdough bread was grilled evenly and the American cheese passed the gooey stringy test.  Like I said, I wanted something quick, easy and non-gourmet and I was not disappointed.  I was in and out in less than 15 minutes as well.

I had a chance to peruse the menu and talk with a repeat customer who said that The Kitchen’s hamburgers were the best around.  He showed me some of the restaurant’s original photos and menus with a fond look in his eyes.  Way back in the day, a full dinner could be had for $0.15 cents — I think they should bring back those days!

While looking at the (real) menu, I decided I needed to come back of course for one of their many hamburger options as well as for the pancakes which are said to be wagon wheel size.  Worth mentioning is breakfast which is served ALL day.  Prices are very reasonable with the average for breakfast around $8, burgers around $7 - $8 and sandwiches around $5.  There is a Kiddie Corner menu for children under 12 for $4.95.

Sometimes it’s good to not have fancy as it can definitely be overrated and overpriced.  At The Kitchen, you get good homemade food served with a friendly smile which is always welcome in my book.
