Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not actually affiliated with Mexican independence but instead commemorates Mexico's defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1892. According to History.com, the holiday is a minor one in Mexico though its American neighbors have adopted the day as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.
