The First Grader | SIFF Film Review

The Seattle International Film Festival opened this week at McCaw Hall and the opening film, The First Grader, is reviewed.

For every flaw that is in The First Grader you can’t help, but think, “but, but, old man going to elementary school!” and it’s all made up for.

The First Grader was the Seattle International Film Festival opening film this year. It is the story of an 84 year old Mau-Mau freedom fighter, Maruge, in Kenya who wishes to go to primary school to learn to read. He has received a letter, but cannot read it. He hears that the Kenyan government has announced that education is now free to all and Maruge shows up to learn. The film tries to point out against tribalism and to show the power of literacy.
