This past week marked the extension of FISA, also known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillence Act. The Senate passed a 5 year extension of the law and President Obama gave the final approval. Now, as a matter of full disclosure, I support this law and have supported it from the first time I heard about it.
The most controversial part of this law is the authority it gives the federal government to monitor phone calls coming into this country from foreign countries. I don't have a problem with it. Afterall, everyone entering this country from another country is subject to a warrantless search so phone calls shouldn't be different.
What is stunning, is the silence from the left. I recall when George W Bush was President, the left made political hay about this program even though it was a program that had already existed for a long time. Heck, you had Code Pink and other left wing nut jobs protesting and trying to make an argument that Achmed the Terrorist had a right to privacy when he was making phone calls to terorrist cells within the United States. However, to the left, I guess it is just fine when Democrats continue the same program. I guess Bush and Cheney had it right when they approved this program. Seems funny that Obama is continuing the same programs that Bush and Cheney did. I guess they were smart. Thank goodness Obama sees the value in this law in protecting this country. Unfortunately, his followers are willing to pressure a Republican President into scrapping this law in order to make politcal hay.
Just another example of why I believe that the left in this country are some of the biggest hypocrites around.
You all have a Happy New Year!
