Head-On Collision on SR 410 Kills 26 Year-Old Man

A head-on collision on SR 410 near 254th Ave. E. Tuesday afternoon left a 26 year-old Milton man dead and another driver critically injured.

The driver of a Jeep SUV was pronounced dead on the scene earlier today after he attempted to pass another vehicle and struck a one-ton pickup on SR 410 and 254th Ave. E., according to East Pierce Fire and Rescue and the Washington State Patrol.

Tyler S. Nelson, 26, was driving westbound on the 24800 block of State Route 410 East between Bonney Lake and Buckley, at approximately 3:45 p.m. today when he struck the eastbound 1996 Ford F450 truck head on.

Nelson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and both cars were totalled. The driver of the truck, 34 year-old Martin Nachtsheim from Enumclaw, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions for more than two hours, and roads are now open. Washington State Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. Weather did not appear to be a factor. The road was bare and wet.

Update at 6:40 p.m.: From Trooper Guy Gill -Β  The causing driver who was pronounced deceased at the collision scene is a 26 year-old Milton man.

Update at 6:13 p.m.: From Trooper Guy Gill - Causing vehicle is a white 1998 Jeep Cherokee. Victim vehicle is a white 2006 Ford F-450 pickup

Update at 6:05 p.m.: From Trooper Guy Gill - Tow trucks are on scene removing the vehicles. The roadway should be open shortly.

One person was confirmed deceased in a two-vehicle fatality collision on State Route 410 at milepost 18 and the roadway is blocked, said State Patrol Trooper Guy Gill on Twitter at about 4:20 p.m. today.

It's a head-on collision and does not appear to be weather related, he said.

Gill also said that witnesses report seeing the causing vehicle attempt to pass others and head into oncoming traffic, striking the victim vehicle.

The driver of the causing vehicle was killed, he said. The victim was taken to a local hospital and expected to survive.

An earlier tweet from Washington State Department of Transportation at about 4:15 p.m. said its a rollover collision at 254th Street near Buckley. WSDOT set up a detour around the collision from 234th Avenue to Enwhistle Road to 254th to 410.

The WSDOT site indicates the accident occurred at 3:43 p.m. and is not expected to clear until after 5 p.m.
