NWS Warns of Continued Cool Temps and Dropping Snow Levels Tuesday

Snow accumulation is not expected to be significant below 6,000 feet; it's unclear if the snowfall might affect the expected reopening of Chinook Pass this weekend.

The National Weather Service updated its special weather statement Monday afternoon warning of continued cooler temperatures and snow levels dropping to 4,000 feet into Tuesday, though accumulation isn't expected to be significant until above 6,000 feet.

Near Enumclaw, Cayuse Pass, which sits at 4,675 feet remains open, according to the WSDOT. Chinook Pass, at 5,430 feet, remains closed and the agency had expected to be able to open it on Friday, May 25. It is unclear at this point if this late season snowfall might delay the Memorial Day Weekend reopening.

Temperatures in Enumclaw will reach highs in the 50s most of the week, with temperatures anticipated to rise to about 64 degrees on Friday and through the weekend.

Here's the statement from the NWS:

...a frontal system followed by an upper trough will bring a transition to cooler and wet weather...
A cold front will move east of the Cascades this evening. An upper trough will follow the front tonight and Tuesday for cool and showery weather.
The change in the weather pattern will be most significant in the mountains. Snow levels will fall from around 6,000 feet this evening to 4,000 feet late tonight and Tuesday. The higher mountain passes will have snow at times but only light accumulation is expected. Up to a foot of snow could fall above 6,000 feet.
People planning to venture into the backcountry should expect much cooler conditions with rain and snow. Significant snowfall accumulations are likely above 6,000 feet ... especially on the Cascade volcanoes.
