Right to a Healthy Spirit

What do these people have in common?  Jimi Hendrix, Michelangelo, Prince Charles, and Isaac Newton?

Don’t know?  What if I add these political figures to the list:  Presidents Barack Obama, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton; Benjamin Franklin, Charlemagne, and Julius Caesar.

Still stumped?

The common denominator is their left-handedness.

Some studies have pointed to some advantages of being left-handed:  they tend to be more athletic, have greater spatial awareness, and quicker thinking.  There is even some evidence that their capacity for problem-solving is twice as fast as their right-handed cohorts.

What causes left-handedness?  Nobody really knows for sure but there does seem to be both genetic and environmental factors.  Depending upon cultural differences, on average about 15% of the population has the distinction of being left-handed.

But there is a source of wisdom even greater than scientific studies, The Bible.

There are a few verses in the Bible that make reference to right and left.

The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left. Ecclesiastes 10:2

Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil. Proverbs 4:27

But the Bible does not speak of good and evil based upon the right or left.  Hebraic scholars have determined that “right” in the Bible represents the spiritual and “left” represents the physical.  I just find it interesting sometimes to delve deeper into what the little words signify.  And personally, I tend to use the Bible as my source of definition whenever possible.

How about you?  What do you use to define your life?  Power?  Money?  Cars, TVs, phones?  Think of it this way.  Those material things are what are “left” here on earth when your body expires and your spirit goes “right” to heaven.  What are you doing to keep your spirit healthy?  Do you exercise your brain?  Your heart?  And I’m not talking about aerobics—I mean do you improve the state of your spiritual heart?

Love, like, praise, enjoy, share, hug, help, visit, endeavor, create, dream, listen, appreciate, forgive…concentrate on doing several of these each day for a healthy heart.

Avoid doing these things:  hate, dislike, ignore, provoke, kill, annoy, aggravate, belittle, curse, defame, destroy, oppress, or renege.

Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in America.  But it is my opinion that it’s not only the physical organ that is unhealthy.  There are far too many people with hearts that are swollen with negativity—so distorted that there is little or no room left for love and pleasure.

I challenge you to examine your heart.  What would your spiritual heart look like if it could be   x-rayed?   Would there be evidence of dreaming, forgiveness, and love right there?  Or would you only be left with destruction, curses, and pain?
