Cycle Rides Within a Day's Drive of Enumclaw #2

Like the Discovery Trail at Long Beach, the bike trails of northern Idaho are not a daytrip from Enumclaw, but you can get there in a day.  For some great rides in the PNW, consider the Route of the Hiawatha and the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes.

Hiawatha is a 15-mile unpaved railroad downgrade with many tunnels and high trestles, and a shuttle back up to your starting point.  (It is the same rail bed that runs through the Snoqualmie Tunnel on our Iron Horse Trail and the Cedar River Trail in Maple Valley.  The ride begins just over the border in Montana, but you cross back into Idaho halfway through the 1.6-mile tunnel at the start.  Markers along the trail provide a historical context, with information about mining, the great fire of 1910, and some of the wildest U.S. towns of the time.  It is an easy ride on a mountain bike, or any cycle with wide tires.  Be sure to bring lights, extra batteries, water, and a jacket for the cold tunnel.

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is a 75-mile paved bike trail that crosses most of the Idaho panhandle.  Different sections follow the banks of Lake Coeur d'Alene and other lakes, wetlands with a variety of plant and animal life (including frequently seen moose), the world-famous Silver Mountain mining area, and several quirky small towns.  There are multiple entry points and restrooms along the way.  This is one of the most highly rated bike trails in the nation, and well worth the seven-hour drive from Enumclaw.
