This observation by a former graduate student at the UW is worthwhile passing on. The CMA he refers to is the Chinese Meteorological Administration; the equivalent to our National Weather Service.
He was in China and presented to the CMA including the administrator of that organization. He was struck by how there was no pseudo-science debate about global warming there. He noted that they don't like what it means for their economy or for the choice of fuel mix that will ultimately be needed. But that they don't deny its existence and aren't bogged down in the politics of big energy trying to convince people that it’s all a hoax and that the scientific community is either corrupt or a bunch of morons.
I suppose that this is because “big energy” in China
is controlled by the “Party” and the party sees no benefit in promoting
misinformation on that topic. On the other hand, in the US, energy companies see financial gain for themselves in continuing to put out misinformation.
Tolerating pseudo-science is one of the prices we pay for a “free” society.
