Within the category of Aid or Emergency Medical Service calls your Enumclaw Fire Department responded to assist three elderly patients who had fallen within the past week. Fortunately only one of these individuals required transport and hospital care. The members of EFD wanted to take a moment to increase awareness of the problem of falls in our older population.

National Safety Council data indicates that in 2007 more than 20,000 Americans died as a result of falls and more than 7.9 million were injured by a fall including over 1.8 million older adults who had a fall injury that resulted in an emergency room visit. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among adults 73 and older and the second leading cause of death from ages 60-72.

The following is list of a few simple things we can do to help protect ourselves or a loved one from a fall:

  • Stay fit and flexible. Maintain your physical strength to improve your balance to prevent falling
  • Remove tripping hazards from indoor and outdoor spaces
  • Secure electrical cords and scatter rugs
  • Check for slippery substances on walkways and stairs
  • Make sure walkways and stairs are well lit and clutter free.
