Standoff Ends When Woman is Shot By King County Sheriff's Deputy

Woman was reportedly breaking windows in her rural Enumclaw home; she disappeared inside the residence for several hours with a weapon after deputies arrived.

A standoff between a woman and King County Sheriff’s Deputies ended Thursday around 7:05 p.m. when the suspect raised a weapon toward a SWAT officer searching the house in rural Enumclaw.

The deputy fired at least once, injuring the 43-year-old suspect. She was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with non-life threatening injuries, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The 42-year-old deputy has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 16 years.

The incident began about 1:50 p.m. Thursday when deputies were called to a house in the 37300 block of 244th Avenue Southeast. The woman who lived in the house was reportedly breaking out windows. The reporting neighbor said that the woman and her husband were having marital problems.

Sheriff's deputies arrived and tried talking to the woman but she retreated to a back bedroom and fired off a shot from a shotgun. At this point, it is unclear if she was actually shooting at the deputies. No one else was home but there were several other weapons in the residence.

The Sheriff's Office SWAT Team and negotiators were called out and tried to talk to the woman all afternoon. When she didn’t answer her cellphone, a “throw phone” was tossed into the house but the woman would not answer it. At 5 p.m., a robot was deployed to search the house and communicate with the woman. However, she could not be found.

SWAT deputies who entered the home around 6:30 p.m. were unable to find the woman, either. A half-hour later, a deputy who dropped down into the home’s crawl space was confronted by the woman holding a shotgun.

Despite several commands to drop the weapon, the deputy fired and the woman was hit at least once.

The shooting will be reviewed by the Sheriff's Office Shooting Review Board.
