Two Local Candidates Drop Out of Races

The withdrawal Robert Veitch and Sara Poe Hardersen of leaves only two local contested election races for Enumclaw voters -- one City Council spot and one for School Board.

Two candidates have dropped out of Enumclaw-area races, leaving only two contested ones for the Nov. 8 general election.

Robert Veitch has withdrawn from the Position No. 4 Enumclaw City Council race against Chance LaFleur. So, unless a write-in candidate comes forward, LaFleur will be unopposed and take over for Jeff Beckwith, who did not seek re-election.

Similarly, Sara Poe Hardersen has dropped out of the race against April Schroeder for the Enumclaw School District No. 2 position. Schroeder was appointed to the position recently to fill a vacancy, so she will just continue unopposed unless there is a write-in challenger.

Each of those boards still will have one contested race.

Richard Elfers, the incumbent in Position No. 2 on the City Council, will face local businessman Darrel Dickson, the president of the Enumclaw Rotary Club.

And for the school District No.4 seat, Tina McGann, who previously served as PTA president at , faces Dan L. Peterson as incumbent Tim Nickson has decided not to run.

No races will be decided in the primary Aug. 16, since none has three candidates.

The only other City Council spot up for election is Position No. 6. Incumbent Jim Hogan is unopposed. The other four seats are not up for election.

In the Enumclaw School District, incumbents Nancy Merrill and Corey Cassell are unopposed for their District No. 1 and District No. 3 seats. The other two spots are not up for election.

Also, no one has filed to run against David Hannity for the No. 1 commissioner position in Fire District No. 28, which serves Enumclaw.

Key dates for voters coming up for the Aug. 16 primary are: July 18, deadline for mail and online voter registration; July 19, ballots mailed; and Aug. 8, last day to register in person.
