City Council Looks at YEAS Football Field Project Tonight

Council meets at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall tonight, Monday, March 28.

On the Enumclaw City Council's agenda tonight is a review of Resolution No. 1409 regarding the proposed reconstruction of a football field at Enumclaw Stadium, located at the Expo Center.

According to the Your Enumclaw Area Stadium Improvement (YEAS) Committee, which as been a vocal proponent of the renovation, the goal is to create an all-weather synthetic multi-sports turf surface field that will benefit many local community sporting events, especially since natural turf fields become damaged and unplayable in the fall and winter months -- the most active time of the year for field sport programs.

Community Development Director Erika Shook reported that the YEAS stadium project has currently has received two grants: a $300,000 grant from the state Recreation and Conservation Office, and a $75,000 grant from King County Youth Sports Facilities. The former grant was somewhat uncertain, based on actions by the state Legislature.

The city has until April to accept the King County grant, she said, and city staff did recommend that the resolution be approved and reconstruction authorized to proceed. (See tonight's council packet, pages 25-26).

Council will also hear a presentation from Chris Searcy, the city public works director and Ed Hawthorne, natural gas manager, about the city's success in meeting requirements set forth by the state Utilities and Transportation Commission in accordance with a settlement put together after flaws were found with Enumclaw's natural gas system in 2009.
