Council Revisits Gravel Lot Discussion Tonight

The community has been vocal about whether or not the city should purchase the lot adjacent to City Perk Home & Garden.

Community members both in favor and against a potential city purchase of the  had expected the Enumclaw City Council to act on the resolution concerning this purchase at its last meeting on May 23, but the Council postponed action at that time until it had all members present, which is expected to be during tonight's meeting.

Several members of the local arts and business communities voiced their support for the city purchasing that property and turning it into a communal park.

Tracey McCallum, the director of the Chamber of Commerce, told Council in May, "I really think it's a great opportunity that we have to make the community better and stronger."

Meanwhile, Darrel Dickson, a local business owner and president of the Enumclaw Rotary Club, offered a counterpoint. The city continues to lose money on the golf course and the Expo Center, and the library is in dire need of funds as well. "Is this really our top priority?" he asked

Council is also expected to act on an ordinance related to the Elk Meadows Preliminary Plat project which seeks to subdivide 2.07 acres into 12 single family residence lots and one stormwater management tract at the northeast corner of Warner Avenue East and Watson Street North. The Hearing Examiner had recommended approval of this preliminary plat, subject to conditions, according to City Planner Clark Close (see pages 56-66 of the agenda packet). Several Council members commented on the issue in May of Type 9 streets used in this proposal, following the last meeting's discussion of these streets related to the  preliminary plat.
