Enumclaw Election Watch 2011 (Updated): Two Contested Races Shaping Up Each for City Council, School Board

As of Friday evening, five candidates have filed for City Council races and six have thrown their hats in the ring for School Board.

Candidate filing for all King County races, including those for Enumclaw City Council, School Board and Fire District No. 28 concluded today at 4:30 p.m. and according to King County Election's 6:35 p.m. update, four local races will be contested, meaning that there are at least two candidates.

Richard Elfers, the incumbent holding Position No. 2 on the City Council, will face challenger Darrel Dickson, a local businessman and president of the Enumclaw Rotary Club.

Chance LaFleur and Robert Veitch will vie for Position No. 4, currently held by Jeff Beckwith who has indicated he would not seek re-election.

"I have been on Council for nine years now and was on the Park Board for six years before that so it is time for a break and to allow others to take their turn," Beckwith wrote in an email to Patch. 

Position No. 6 incumbent Jim Hogan will run unopposed.

The Enumclaw City Council is a seven-member body. These are the only three seats that are open for election this year.

School District

In the Enumclaw School District, current members Nancy Merrill and Corey Cassell are running unopposed for re-election to their respective District No. 1 and District No. 3 seats. 

Tina McGann, who previously served as PTA president at , faces a challenge from Dan L. Peterson for the District No. 4 seat, currently held by Tim Nickson, who said he is not running due to work schedule changes.

April Schroeder, secretary of Sunrise Elementary's PTA, and Sara Poe Hardersen, an Enumclaw-area realtor, have filed to run for the District No. 2 position, which is currently open that will ensure the position is filled until elections this year.
