Free Recycling Services Reinstated for Enumclaw Transfer Station Starting Feb. 11

Local press reported that King County was trying to save money by closing services at a number of locations including Enumclaw.

Recycling services at the Enumclaw transfer station will be restored this coming Saturday, Feb. 11, Enumclaw Mayor Liz Reynolds reported today.

Reynolds said that she had the opportunity to speak with Kevin Kiernan, director of the solid waste division for King County, about the decision to close the service as well as "the far reaching negative impacts their decision would create for our area as well as the forest service area."

Kiernan informed Reynolds Wednesday of the decision to restores services both in Enumclaw as well as the Cedar Falls Drop Box in North Bend.

The SnoValley Star reported yesterday that the county was aiming to save $400,000 a year by stopping the services at Shoreline, Houghton, Renton, Cedar Falls and Enumclaw.

According to a press release from the city of North Bend, King County Solid Waste received requests, primarily from residents in the Cedar Falls and Enumclaw services areas, to reinstate the service at those facilities.

"Reinstating service at Enumclaw and Cedar Falls is recognition that drop-off recyclables service is appropriate in areas where curbside recyclables collection cannot be readily accessed," the release said.

King County estimates restoration of service at Cedar Falls and Enumclaw will cost approximately $200,000 per year. The costs will be monitored as the service is reinstated and a supplemental appropriation request may be made if necessary.
