Enumclaw Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for Sports Complex

Mayor Reynolds praises the community for its "passionate" support of youth athletics.

Community members, football players, City Council members and the Enumclaw High School band all came out to show their support at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Enumclaw Sports Complex on Wednesday night, June 29.

The $455,000 project is expected to be completed in time for Enumclaw High School's first home game Sept. 2.

Five guest speakers were at the Enumclaw Expo Center for the event: Enumclaw Mayor Liz Reynolds, former mayor and president of YEAS John Wise, treasurer of YEAS Rick Bathum, former governor and co-chair of the Washington Wildlife Recreation Coalition Mike Lowry, and school district Superintendent Mike Nelson.

“This is an absolutely amazing community celebration,” Reynolds said. “This is what community is all about and will show you what the power of the community can do when they pull together.”

Reynolds said the community is passionate about its youth.

“They are passionate about the user groups, whether it is Wolverines, Little Hornets, soccer or varsity football,” she said.

She said there is a “synergy” created toward youth sports that gets everyone involved and supportive.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to give our home team what other communities have,” Reynolds added.

Superintendent Nelson also talked about “synergy.” He said he has seen a sense of selflessness during tough times for everyone. Yet everyone has seemed to “check their egos at the door” and supported the building of the new sports complex for a higher purpose.

“A purpose reaching beyond next football season but for football seasons to come and soccer seasons to come as well as community events,” Nelson said.

Nelson added that he spoke before everyone with a “grateful heart and a sense of gratitude” for everything that has transpired in the past couple of years to make the sports complex a reality.

“It is monumental that we are taking this step,” Nelson said.

Lowry complimented the community on how well it has worked together.

“We think this is tremendous. The reason it came in number one and the community got $300,000 is because of the merit of it and the hard work of the community,” Lowry said, referring to the state grant received for the project.
