Enumclaw Schools Ease Students Back With Events This Week

Freshmen orientation kicks it off Wednesday, but Hornet Days help all students get ready for return to school.

Summer is finally here with temperatures in the 80s, so, naturally, that means school is just around the corner.

School doesn’t start until Sept. 6 in the Enumclaw district, but lots of events are taking place long before that.

Freshman orientation takes place Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Enumclaw High School. The frosh will be able to meet new classmates, explore the school and tour their classes.

Hornet Days takes place Thursday and Friday, Aug. 25-26. If your last name ends in A-F, go to the school between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Thursday; G-L goes from noon to 2 pm. On Friday, go from 8 to 10:30 a.m. if your last name is M-R, with the rest of the students going
from noon to 2:30.

Students who can’t attend Hornet Days must pick up their schedules on the first day of school.

Hornet Days is all about getting ready for school with pictures, temporary identification card, parking stickers, lockers,
student body card-annual and payment of fees. ASB cards are $40; parking is $20 with ASB, $30 without; annual is $48 with ASB, $50 without. The Class of 2012 also can sign up for grad night, which is $155.

Athletic fees are $55, but just like last year, the district will only provide transportation to sporting events in White River, Bonney Lake and Sumner. Parents need to provide transportation home because of cost-cutting measures.

New teachers can participate in a welcome breakfast Aug. 29 at 7:30 a.m. at the Enumclaw VFW Hall, 44426 244th Ave. S.E. The event, put on by the chamber, will include a gift bag.

The school day this year consists of six 55-minute classes, going from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays. Classes are a little shorter than that the rest of the week, and schools ends at 1:15 p.m. Fridays.

Other key dates include an open house set for Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. And, just for fun, for those who would like to know, school gets out
June 15, 2012.

Other key statistics: Food prices are $1.50 for breakfast and $3 for lunch; only 22 percent of students qualify for free and reduced
lunch; daily average attendance 92.5 percent; and the average class size is 21.1.
