Hancock Resigns from School Board, District No. 2 Applicants Sought

An error in regards to residency and district boundaries disqualifies Tamarah Hancock from serving on the position she was appointed to in January.

Tamarah Hancock, who up until today served on the Enumclaw School District Board of Directors representing district No. 2, resigned her position after verifying a residency error that disqualifies her from serving in that position, according to an announcement by the district today.

In a letter written to the other four board members, Hancock states:

“I just discovered that our home address falls within Director District #1 service area, not Director District #2.  We live at the end of a dirt road that roughly parallels SR 410 for about a mile, just to the north near the turn off for Mud Mountain Dam road.  The boundary for Service Area #2 does not go north of SR 410 until it meets Twin Creek, which is farther east along SR 410 than our dirt road.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for this error, and consider this letter, in addition to an apology, one of immediate withdrawal and resignation from the Board.”

Hancock was after it was vacated by Cathy Dahlquist in December, who was elected to the seat but now serves in the state Legislature.

The Board of Directors is now seeking applicants for No. 2 position. Note that the position is still one of four on the board up for election in November. However for the No. 2 position, November's election will determine who serves the final two years of the term formerly won by Dahlquist in 2009.

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, registered to vote in King County, and maintain his/her primary residence in the director area for this vacancy. (See PDF map)

Completed applications should be submitted to:

Chris VanHoof, President
Enumclaw School District Board of Directors
2929 McDougall Avenue
Enumclaw, WA 98022

Applications are due June 2 at 4 p.m. at the Enumclaw School District administration office.

An orientation session for all applicants will take place at 6:30 p.m. on June 2 in the Enumclaw School District office boardroom. The Board of Directors will evaluate each candidate in executive session on June 6. It will then interview selected candidates in open session on June 14 beginning at 4:30 p.m. when a possible appointment could be made. At the June 20 regular monthly board meeting, Superintendent Mike Nelson will administer the oath of office to the appointed board member if a board decision is made.
