Whiz Kid: Black Diamond Scout Wins Award for Lifesaving

Mom Tina McGann reports son Garrett, 9, helped save a boy during a family outing to The Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound.

Garrett McGann, 9, a member of the Black Diamond Cub Scout Pack 581 was recognized tonight for his bravery during a family outing earlier this month, mom Tina reported.

Garrett and his family were enjoying the pool at The Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, Wash., on Sunday, Sept. 11 when Garrett spotted a child who needed help.

"A young boy swimming nearby had slipped down into his lifejacket and was struggling to keep his head above water," Tina said in an email to Patch. The boy "also had a hearing disability and was unable to yell for help."

Garrett rushed to help the boy keep his head about water until the lifeguard was able to take over, his mother reported.

For his bravery, Garrett received The Pack Merit Award for Lifesaving. He's also received a Mount Tahoma District patch. The patch is rare, Tina said, as only 500 were made last year and only 30 to 40 were made with a blue ring, which is what Garrett has.
