Bonney Lake Outlasts Enumclaw 4-1 in SPSL Boys Soccer Action

The Panthers takes advantage of being up a player early in the second half to pull away for victory.

The defending SPSL 3A league champion Bonney Lake High School (6-1-2, 2-1-1 SPSL 3A) traveled to Enumclaw Wednesday to take on the Enumclaw High School boys soccer team (4-6, 0-4 SPSL 3A) and pulled away in the second half with a man advantage to beat the Hornets 4-1 in a SPSL 3A boys soccer contest.

The game started out tightly contested until Bonney Lake opened the scoring in the 19th minute when forward Drew Sadowsky took a crisp pass from James Glavin on the left hand side just around the 18 yard box and made a couple of quick moves to beat Enumclaw goalie Demetri Anderson at the right far post, putting the Panthers ahead 1-0.

"We had to work really hard to get the goals today," Sadowsky said. "With the conditions we were not able to play our usual passing game."

Austin Curtis extended the Bonney Lake lead on another Glavin assist in the 23rd minute when he did a quick dribble drive through a couple of Enumclaw defenders to extend the Panther lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.

The Hornets came out hard early in the second half with having the more favorable playing conditions going on the attack towards the parking lot side of the field. However, they suffered a red card on a tough challenge in the penalty area in the opening stages of the second half, setting up a Bonney Lake penalty kick in which Enumclaw keeper Anderson made a huge diving save to keep the Hornets right in the contest.

Enumclaw would not give up without a fight as they struck back with a goal in the 46th minute to cut the margin to 2-1. Sophomore Caleb Gwerder commented on his team's resilience with being a man down for the majority of the second half.

"We stayed in it pretty well considering we were a man down," Gwerder said. "They got some goals but that happens when you're a man down and have to get up the field."

The Panthers sealed the game in the 68th minute when Sadowsky put togther a strong finishing run down the left hand side of the Hornet defense and scored an unassisted goal to stretch the lead to 3-1.

Bonney Lake assistant coach Randy Jones lauded his teams efforts in tough playing conditions.

"It was a tough game," he said. "It was unfortunate that (Enumclaw) got that red card. We would have liked to have beaten them at full strength."

Hornet coach Skip Ashley made multiple attempts to file a protest about the red card and the procedures used in administering the red card. Ashley first tried to file with the assistant referee and then after the game, he attempted to file his protest with the center referee; what conversation, if any, between Ashley and the referee appeared to be very short in duration in regard to the filing of the protest.

Ashley respectfully declined comment after the game with Patch.

Enumclaw will return to action on Tuesday, April 12 against Lakes High School at 7 p.m. Bonney Lake will next take on Sumner at Sunset Stadium on Friday night at 7 p.m.
