Community Leaders Recognize EHS Student Athletes

There was a theme running through the various remarks made by city and school leaders alike Wednesday afternoon at Enumclaw City Hall during a special event recognizing the achievements of Enumclaw High School's student athletes: Hornets athletes do it all.

"Enumclaw values the multisport athletes," said Athletic Director Kevin Smith, and the Hornets often face their peers at other schools who have trained to compete in single sports only.

Girls wrestling coach Jerry Scheidt, girls tennis coach Rick Carel and girls gymnastics coach Ben Skipworth were on hand to celebrate their athletes during a Celebration of Champions event that drew leaders including Mayor Liz Reynolds, Schools Superintendent Mike Nelson, and countless friends and family members.

Scheidt touted the academic and non-wrestling achievements of his wrestlers including KC Moulden.

Carel celebrated the fact that every member of his girls team made all-team honors and credited the achievement to not only the students but their families as well. "It's just been a total team thing," he said.

Similarly, Skipworth recognized the community surrounding his athletes who've helped to make the new gymnastics program the success that it has become.

Principal Jill Burnes said of the athletes, "it's really tremendous what our students are doing... It's been impossible to make it to everything, and what a great problem to have."
