EHS Boys May Finally Overtake Girls to be The Ones to Bring Home State Trophy

Hornets return fearsome foursome that has placed in the top 5 at state 3 years in a row.

This finally may be the year the boys golf team at Enumclaw High School does better than the girls.

It has been a while. Coach Bob Kilmer said the girls have been South Puget Sound League 3A division champs seven or eight years in a row. They were state champs a few years back and have finished in the top five at state for years.

“We got a lot of state trophies,” Kilmer said, thanks in part to Kelly Sweeney, the No. 1 player in the school’s history who is now playing for Whitman College in Walla Walla.

The girls lack depth this year so they will rely heavily on co-captains Tiffany Wilkening and Maidelane Petellan. Kilmer expects Decatur to be the key threat to knocking EHS off its thrown.

With the girls being so young, the talented boys team could be the one to rise up to be state champs this year. They return a foursome
that placed second at state last year. They were third the previous year and fifth three years ago.

“We have high expectations,” Kilmer said, adding that they are so good they plan to “challenge ourselves against the golf course and not worry about the other teams.”

The fearsome foursome consists of Tyler Salsbury, who already has committed to playing golf at the University of Washington; Colton McCluskey, Jay Stolver and David Smith, who are all seniors.

Kilmer said it won’t be a cakewalk, however, as Peninsula and Auburn-Mountain View also have strong teams.

Also, in high school, varsity teams rely on six golfers, not four.

“So, we’re counting on some freshmen and sophomores to step up and find a spot. Practices will be competitive,” he said, adding that Junior Condon, Beau Brock and Colton King look like the early favorites for those other two positions.

Both the girls and boys open the season Sept. 6 against Peninsula. The boys will be at home and the girls away. Both matches start at 3:15 p.m.

Kilmer said EHS has such a great golfing tradition because of the community.

“Parents support the golf program here,” he said. “We have a good parks department, and the city makes it convenient and easy for kids to play.”
