EHS Boys Soccer Coach Steps Down

Skip Ashley leaves behind 21 years of coaching -- 10 of those in Enumclaw -- to better focus on his family.

Enumclaw High School's head boys soccer coach Skip Ashley will not be returning next year - opting instead to focus on his family.

Athletic Director Kevin Smith said of Ashley, "His professionalism and caring and dedication to his student-athletes will be missed in the EHS Boys' Soccer program.  We will soon begin the process of locating and hiring a new head coach."

Smith also shared a letter Ashley wrote:

To my mentors, colleagues, rivals, and friends,

It is with both much happiness and sadness that after 21 straight years of coaching at least one sport season, I will be hanging up my whistle and stepping away from coaching.  With my daughter finishing kindergarten next month, I have decided to devote more time to my child than the countless afternoons, evenings, and weekends to other people's children.

Some of you have been my mentors since I was at McAlder Elementary School, while others I have only had the privilege to meet as colleagues this year.  I have truly enjoyed your camaraderie and competition.  I have experienced the thrill of victory as recently as this season reaching the State bracket in soccer to the agony of defeat of losing every junior varsity football game several years ago.  My proudest moments have been going to State, having four soccer teams with a total of 71 players at Enumclaw this year, winning a  league team sportsmanship award, being in the play-offs 9 out of 12 seasons, and winning a league coach of the year award.

To all of you that I have coached against, thank you for the challenge.  We had many exciting moments and games!  No matter the outcomes, I always tried to get my teams to be respectful and play the game the right way.

Thank you for the joy of competition.  I wish you much success.
