EHS Girls Hoops Topples Camas 55-49 in Overtime

Jessica Snoen's three-point shot late in overtime gave the Hornets the win in the district playoff opener Tuesday night.

Katina Ferguson's team-high 14 points, buoyed by 10 points a piece by teammates Jessica Snoen and Hannah Calvert, led Enumclaw (10-12) to another come-from-behind victory over Camas (12-9) 55-49 in the opening round of the West Central District III girls basketball tournament at Clover Park High School Tuesday.

The Hornets' play-off inexperience showed early in the first half as the Papermakers took a  25-16 lead into halftime.

"I thought we came out a little nervous at first and had a little tentativeness," Enumclaw coach Beth Madill said. "We regrouped at halftime and came out more aggressive, stepped up our plan, and competed."

Enumclaw got its rally going with a three-point shot by Snoen, which cut the Camas lead to 27-19 with 5:18 left in the third quarter. This shot was the start of a 12-2 run that cut the Papermakers' lead to 29-28 late in the third quarter. The Hornets also got strong post play from Ferguson, key penetrating shots from Callie Remitz, and clutch perimeter shooting from Snoen and Calvert.

In the fourth quarter, the Hornets held the lead at 44-42 when Calvert's jump shot was overturned on a traveling violation. The Papermakers took advantage and forced overtime by tying the game at 44.

With the game tied at 46 and with under two minutes to go, Snoen took her defender from Camas down the left baseline and nailed the three-point shot that put Enumclaw ahead for good at 49-46.

"It was going through my mind as I got the ball that I had to make that shot," Snoen said.

"I was really proud of how the girls responded," Madill said. "It was really important for us to come here (to districts after a three-win season in 2009-2010) and win. The girls have stayed committed throughout the summer and the season and have really faced adversity well."

Snoen said, "I'm really proud of everyone to be down by 11 and we stayed strong and came through with the win in overtime."

Enumclaw will now take on Kennedy on Friday -- the winner travels to the state tournament game.

"Kennedy is an exceptional team," Madill said. "Our schedule we have played this year against teams like White River, Sumner, Lakes, and Auburn Mountainview have prepared us well for playing a team like Kennedy. We know we will be the underdog but that is why they play the games."

The Hornets game against Kennedy will start on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Clover Park High School in the West Central District 3A Girls Basketball Tournament.
