EHS Star Watch 2011-12: Tyler Salsbury

Salsbury helped a Washington team to a second-place finish at the Hogan Cup in Portland this past weekend and is primed for a strong senior year at EHS before heading to the University of Washington.

Tyler Salsbury of Enumclaw continued a successful summer on the golf course last weekend in Portland as he helped boost the Washington team to a second-place finish in the Eddie Hogan Cup.

He also finished 12th individually in the event, which is similar to a youth version of the Ryder Cup. The tournament had teams from primarily the West and Rocky Mountain regions, ranging from Hawaii to Nevada.

Salsbury said he enjoyed the different format of the tourney.

“The format is take 4 count 3, so you drop the worst score each day,” Salsbury said. ”I really like the format. You know that you can go out with minimal pressure because you know you have your teammates to back you up.”

The home of the 2011 Hogan Cup was the Riverside Golf and Country Club.

“Riverside is a very hard golf course,“ Salsbury said. “This year the winning score was only 1 under par so that shows how challenging the course is. It was narrow with small, hard greens so it was not the best scoring conditions.”

Even the team standings prove that. Northern California won at 5 over par, with Washington at 12 over and Southern California 14 over.

The journey for Salsbury into the sport of golf started back when he was very young.

“My dad took me out when I was 4 years old,” Salsbury said. “I fell in love with it.”

As Salsbury has gotten older he still uses things he has learned from his dad’s golf game while competing for tournament championships and at Enumclaw High School.

“My dad still golfs a bit,” Salsbury said. “He has passed down his skills; also I try to be the best putter I can be as strokes gained on the greens is a major stat.”

With his success on the golf course Salsbury has made an oral commitment to the University of Washington to join the men’s golf program after his senior year at Enumclaw this year. The college search process for Salsbury was a lot easier than normal for a golfer of his caliber.

“The University of Washington was my first choice of colleges,” Salsbury said. “Committing early took a lot of pressure off me to have to make a tougher choice later in the process.”

Salsbury has some high goals for his senior year at EHS.

“I am trying to work on hitting the ball more solid, because consistent contact is the key to hitting the ball closer to hole,” he said.
