Enumclaw Wrestlers Take 3A State Title

Sophomore Lucas Somera became the youngest wrestler to win a state title during coach Lee Reichert's 16 seasons at the helm.

For Josh Musick, the year since he last competed in the Mat Classic had become a year of having to remember what slipped through his hands.

Now he can focus on what he wears around his neck.

Musick shook off the memories of a championship match loss in 2010, winning the 152-pound division and helping Enumclaw take the team title.

It seemed especially appropriate for Musick to be the wrestler that clinched at least a share of the team title (Kario Wallin secured it solely for the Hornets in the next match). Last year, Musick fell short in the title match, a loss that handed Yelm the 3A title and forced Enumclaw to settle for second.

“It stayed with me for about a year,” Musick said of the loss. “Until I watched the video of that finals [last month].”

Aided by a desire to avoid ever having to watch another similar video, Musick pulled out a 6-2 victory over Hamilton Noel of Liberty (Issaquah).

The win for Musick came after  sophomore Lucas Somera got things started for Enumclaw with a title in the 135-pound weight division. Somera became the youngest wrestler to win a state title during coach Lee Reichert’s 16 seasons at the helm.

Musick’s victory assured at least a share of the team title for Enumclaw and Wallin locked it up for the Hornets, pinning Connor Boyce 1:29 into the second period.

“They’ve worked hard all season long,” coach Lee Reichert said. “I put them through the toughest schedule I could put them through and they just continued to get better. I’m so proud of these guys."

Two other Enumclaw wrestlers placed, including Hunter File, who was third at 130 pounds and Marcus Nichols who was seventh at 140 pounds.
