Enumclaw Wrestling Prepared for Push to State

The Enumclaw wrestling team takes part in the West Central District regional playoff this weekend at Bonney Lake High School.

After a perfect 5-0 league season, the Enumclaw wrestling team is preparing for the West Central District regional meet this weekend at Bonney Lake High School.

The Hornets will be represented by 13 wrestlers across 11 weight classes, all vying for a spot in the Mat Classic state tournament (Feb 18-19, Tacoma Dome).

“It’s one of the tougher regions in the state,” coach Lee Reichert said of the WCD meet.

Enumclaw should have a legitimate chance to send 8-10 wrestlers on to state (top-5 in each weight class advance to state), if recent results are any indication.

“We had 10 in the finals last weekend and eight champions, so we’re pretty excited about that,” Reichert said.

The Hornets are led by a quintet of wrestlers currently ranked in the top-3 of their respective weight classes by washingtonwrestlingreport.com. Josh Musick (152), Hunter File (130) and Kario Wallin (160) are all ranked as the number-one 3A wrestlers in their weight classes, while Tyke Reid (112) is ranked second and Lucas Somera (135) is ranked third.

Musick has to be considered the odds-on favorite to take first at the WCD meet and at the Mat Classic. The senior finished second last year, after taking third his sophomore year. File is the defending state champ, while Wallin took second in 2010.

Enumclaw also has five underclassmen who could make some noise, led by Reid and Somera. Freshman Jayden Fend (119) and sophomores Justin Mitchell (140) and Ryan Anderson (152) all have the chance to advance.

The Hornets will not face their biggest threat for the top 3A team spot, as University will be competing in a different regional. But Enumclaw will be facing the number-three team in the 3A class, Yelm and the number six team, Kelso.

“It’s one of the tougher regions in the state,” Reichert said. “Yelm is loaded, so we’ll have our hands full, and so is Kelso.”

Barring any major surprises, the Hornets should send enough wrestlers to compete for the state title they narrowly missed out on last year. Enumclaw has won two of the previous three team state titles and seems to have the piece to take another this year. Reichert though, said the team is not getting ahead of itself.

“Our draws look good,” Reichert said. “We just have to take one match at a time and see how things go.”
