Hornets Girls Soccer Knock off Seahawks 1-0 in SPSL Girls Soccer Opener

The young Hornet squad uses tough defense, crisp passing and a timely goal to beat Peninsula on Tuesday night.

The Enumclaw (2-4-1, 1-0-0 SPSL 3A) girls soccer team was playing with everything on the line early in the season. Their backs were against the wall with several key players out of the lineup, and they were in desperate need of a win.

They got it Tuesday, knocking off visiting Peninsula (2-3-1, 0-1-0 SPSL 3A) High School 1-0 at Pete's Pool in Enumclaw.

"Overall we played pretty well," Enumclaw head coach Shawn Tobius said. "We had been working on playing faster and moving off the ball."

The first half was a scoreless battle with both teams creating chances and making tough defensive saves. The Seahawks made a strong save off their goal line in the 18th minute, holding Hornet Nadine Huff who had broken free along the left hand side and got off a crossing shot toward goal.

Enumclaw gradually took more control offensively in the second half, putting Peninsula back on its heels defensively.

Hornet Midfielder Jessica Snoen broke the ice in the 57th minute with a beautifully struck shot into the upper left hand corner of the net such that the Seahawk's goalie had no shot to stop it. Enumclaw went up 1-0 and that lead would hold the rest of the way.

"I wanted it all game, saw an opportunity and scored," Snoen said. "It was also (Injured Forward Juliet Bannerot's birthday) so I wanted to score for her as well."

Enumclaw would continue to push forward and create some dangerous scoring chances. In the 69th minute Hanah Dahlquist put together a nice individual effort to get open toward goal but had a shot go just wide.

In the 70th minute, Hornet midfielder/forward Katie Christensen combined with Haley Johnson on a nice 1-2 passing combination to get a dangerous shot toward goal but the Peninsula defense would thwart that threat by Enumclaw.

The Hornets were also helped by solid play in the back line with senior Julie Curtin and freshman Katie Craft in goal making a couple saves  to secure a clean sheet for Enumclaw.

Tobius touched on the importance of starting strong in league play with a win over the Seahawks.

"This was extremely important for our confidence," Tobius said.

The Hornets will next have a rematch with Decatur at home on Thursday night and Snoen talked about the importance of coming back and playing the Gators after losing last 1-0 in a nonleague contest on the road last week.

"It's going to be a tough game, we lost a girl to injury last time , so we definitely want to beat them on Thursday," Snoen said.

Game time on Thursday is 7 p.m. at Pete's Pool.
