Father's Day: What is the Best Advice Dad Ever Gave You?

Patch wants to hear your most memorable words of advice from your dad.

An unknown author once wrote, "Any man can be a father. It takes someone special to be a dad."

My father was never more excited and animated than when he took me to the local science museum (akin to the Pacific Science Center in Seattle) when I was little. I still recall my favorite exhibit was an architectural demonstration and involved building a bridge using giant wooden blocks that were shaped to form an arch. You had a mold you placed the blocks on and the final touch was the keystone piece at the top. I remember being awed that once you removed the mold, you could actually walk across that bridge and it would hold your weight.

Though he never received the traditional university education and is a mechanic by trade, I can't think of a more studious person than my father, who could often be found in his study with his nose in a book. His library covers everything from physics (electricity and magnetism) to European history to Eastern medicine, and the books come in both English and Chinese.

Throughout my childhood, rather than telling me that getting an education was important, he showed me by example.

Now, as a mother, I feel like Father's Day is sometimes not celebrated the way Mother's Day is every year. We tend to see a slew of advertisements for Mother's Day gifts and sales for weeks in advance, but Father's Day feels like is sandwiched in with the end-of-school hoopla and graduation celebrations.

The role of fathers has evolved dramatically over the years from when I was young and dads have now taken a more active part in the critical and dynamic realm of raising children.
